Mushroom poisoning

There are about 10 really poisonous mushrooms in Sweden. Some of these may look similar to wild edible mushrooms growing in other countries. To avoid mushroom poisoning, only eat mushrooms that you know for sure are edible.

Beware of the most poisonous mushrooms

Three very poisonous mushrooms in Sweden are the destroying angel, the death cap and the deadly webcap. If you eat any of these, you can get severely poisoned. Eating a larger amount can be life-threatening.

Don't taste a mushroom you don't recognise!

Every year, severe mushroom poisonings occur in Sweden. In nearly all cases, these poisonings happen because people have mistaken edible mushrooms for poisonous ones. If you are not used to picking mushrooms in Sweden, let a person with good knowledge of mushrooms check or clean them.

A simple rule

There is a simple rule to avoid some of the most poisonous mushrooms in Sweden:

  • never eat white mushrooms with white gills,
  • never eat brown mushrooms with brown gills.

If you follow this advice, you will avoid most of the deadly mushrooms that we have in Sweden.
